Legendary La Deli hatching egg surcharge in bird flu

The rising cost of eggs has caused one of Los Angeles' most famous Delis to catch up. Langer started charging customers 50 cents at Delicatessen-restaurant in Westlake last week.
“I'm trying to wait for hope [the price] Will retreat. “Owner Norm Langer said. “But that will continue to increase.” ”
Last year, the average price of twelve eggs nationwide soared to a record $4.95 in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In California, it's even worse, with some grocery stores charging $9 or more for a dozen eggs and limiting the number of eggs customers can buy. Experts say the culprit is the outbreak of avian flu, which is sparse chicken flocks and wider market forces push up grocery stores prices.
Lange said the price increase in egg dishes was temporary and he did not raise the cost of other menus, including the deli's famous hot pastry sandwich.
Lange said that rising costs for agricultural products and other items, besides eggs, continues to put pressure on his business. In 2024, there will be more than 100 famous restaurants across Los Angeles. Owners see labor costs, delivery of application fees and health insurance fees as ongoing obstacles.
Lange said he was not aware of continuing to charge an extra 50 cents for the eggs. He said he heard it might take several months to build the flock. He said that so far, clients have been forgiven.
“All the comments back to me are 'normative, we understand.'” Lange said.
