South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol released from custody

South Korea's impeachment president Yoon Suk Yeol, who was tried on trial for uprising charges imposed martial law in December, was released from the detention center on Saturday, the day after the court ruled his detention invalid.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled on Friday that prosecutors violated the rules of procedure, asking Mr Yoon to detain him for longer than legally allowed, before prosecuting him in January. The court said the procedural violations invalidated Mr Yoon's detention.

A week after prosecutors asked him to be released.

Mr Yoon smiled tolerantly and waved to his supporters as he walked out of the detention center south of Seoul and had been in custody since January 15.

His release does not affect the allegations of uprising he faces in separate lawsuits in Seoul's Criminal Court or Constitutional Court related to martial law. The agency is considering whether his parliamentary impeachment is legal and whether it should officially leave the office. But it does mean that he will be free in regular trials.

This is a developing story. Please check the update.
